Schaltkreis Wassermann

Schaltkreis Wassermann is one of the pioneering electronic groups of the early eighties. The album PSYCHOTRON of 1982 has become a much sought after cult object. In June 2012 it has been re-released on vinyl by Berlin label Private Records. Now there’s the new old album “Early 80s” that contains singles, edits and unreleased tracks that were produced before PSYCHOTRON. Schaltkreis Wassermann is available for live gigs.

PSYCHOTRON is also available as a CD release (2004 on hyperdisc) that also contains the additional single tracks “Space Shuttle”, “Hyperspace”, “WHY” and the collage “Excursion” made out of recordings from a psychedelic studio session in the early eighties.

Schaltkreis live
The very successful premiere of the new Schaltkreis Wassermann live act happened in Lucerne, Switzerland, at Klub Kegelbahn on April 8th 2016. You can hear snippets of this concert on the top of this web page or at Soundcloud.

The next gigs were at Record Store Day in Basel vinyl store Plattfon and then in Berlin at Neuwestberlin on May 13th 2016. On all three gigs VJ Asteriza displayed her visuals – collages of old Schaltkreis graphics, fotos from the early 80ies and other trippy pictures and videos.

The new live repertoire consists of tracks from the new vinyl double album „SKW“, the Psychotron album, singles from the first period of  Schaltkreis and then some completely new music. Tracks like LUX and Hyperspace have been produced anew, partly using original samples. Generally my favorite synths from the 80ies have been used, like ARP 2600, ARP Avatar, Roland 100M and Prophet 6 (in place of the original Prophet V that is defective, unfortunately). The old tracks have partly been treated with additional 808 drums and old samples.

In my live set I play these instruments:
– the new guitar synth Boss SY-300,
– the Roland Voice-Transformer VT-3,
– the Mopho analog synth and the
– KORG Kaossillator.

Space Rock from 2008 to 2010
When Stella was still alive Schaltkreis Wassermann had a couple of live performances from 2008 to 2010, this time as a multimedia space rock live act with completely new repertoire. We played a series of international concerts, for instance at SYNCH festival Athens in 2009 and in Ibiza, Formentera and several Swiss venues. Although very successful with the live public Stella didn’t really like this new repertoire, she often said “this is not really Schaltkreis”. We had lots of arguments about this as she wanted the Schaltkreis sound to be purely synthesizers and I wanted to play guitar. But then sadly Stella with her beautiful voice and her far-out ideas passed away in 2011. So currently this live concept is in hibernation state.

New album coming
The last two years I’ve been busy getting my old analog synths back to a working state. Currently the ARP 2600, the ARP Avatar and the Roland System 100 are in great condition again and connected by control voltage to my Logic Pro production software, thanks to ExpertSleepers interfaces that deliver perfect timing. MIDI has such a terrible timing, especially when connected to MIDI/CV converters, so I’m very happy to have direct control voltage again. Only my old Prophet V still resists any attempts to get it working again, but I’m using a Prophet 6 now which has a fantastic sound, too, that comes very close to the original.

I have recorded a lot of new Schaltkreis material, mostly with my old analog synths. As I’m not a purist I also enjoy to add some software synths and effects, too. Hopefully out in autumn of 2017.

LUX by Schaltkreis Wassermann (movie version)
This is an experimental movie with stroboscopic effects done in the 80ies at “Schule für Gestaltung” in Basel. This soundtrack version of Lux is not on the CD but on the new double-vinyl album “SKW”, released by Private Records Berlin in March 2016.

  • […] LUX originated as a soundtrack to an experimental 16mm movie made by students of Basel Art Academy (Schule für Gestaltung Basel) in the early 80ies. The movie consisted of only the word LUX in black on white ground or LUX in white on black ground. These inverted pictures were cut sometimes slowly and sometimes very fast to create a stroboscopic effect while LUX was moved in different ways. The after images in the beholder’s eye would create fascinating patterns. As the movie was done at 24 frames per second and as 24 can be divided by 3 and by 4 I had the idea to use a musical time signature of four beats of three triplets and another one of three beats of four 16ths at the same time. This would create an interesting ambiguity between the two time signatures and it worked really well with the movie. The noise „hi hats“ at 12 hits per second marked the basic timing that was common to both signatures. There was no musical pitch, all sounds were just noise, created on the ARP 2600 and the ARP Avatar, with some 808 claps added. Stella and I were both fascinated by this early movie version of LUX and we decided to create a more musical version that ended up on our first album PSYCHOTRON that is considered to be cult these days. Again the sounds were provided by the ARP 2600 and the ARP Avatar but also by the Roland 100M modular system and the Prophet V. The latter provided the slowly evolving sound that I like a lot in this track. Overall the album version is musically much more interesting. PSYCHOTRON was distributed all over the world and it hit the number 5 spot in the New Musical Express synth charts. The album, and especially LUX, was a big hit in Italy’s Cosmic scene (Beppe Loda, Daniele Baldelli) but we didn’t know anything about it as there was no internet in the 80ies. We only heard about it around 2004 when we met New York based Swiss DJ Alex Gloor („In Flagranti“) who had been a big fan of Schaltkreis Wassermann for a long time. In 2012 PSYCHOTRON got re-released on vinyl by Berlin’s Private Records. In spring of 2016 there was another double vinyl on Private Records called SKW and featuring unreleased stuff from the early 80ies plus some edits and singles. There is a CD version of PSYCHOTRON with some additional tracks. Today PJ Wassermann has gone live again as Schaltkreis Wassermann playing the Roland SY-300 guitar synth and some additional sound modules. […]
